TREE INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AND ITS RELEVANCE In the taxonomy of the genus Piper L (Piperaceae PROFESSOR: Dr. Ricardo Callejas Posada. (Associate Professor, Inst Biology, University of Antioquia, AA. 1226, Medellín. Colombia).
DATE: 18 al 22 October 2010
COURSE PRESENTATION
The course consists of a series of lectures accompanied by a anatomy laboratory practice Stem the genus Piper, this to emphasize the close relationship between stem anatomy and habits and the latter can be as illuminating some aspects of ecology and growth habits in Piper. Likewise, and given the often profound changes in leaf Piper, expressed not only in form but also in venation, there will be a practical description of leaf architecture and finally a field trip to observe the architectural attributes in different species and collection historic partners (Curculionidae).
The course is designed exclusively for graduate students botanical area (maximum 10 students), with interest in taxonomy of the genus Piper and having adequate knowledge of Morphology and Vascular Plant Taxonomy and Phylogenetic Classification of Flowering Plants.
This course does not want the student to place copies of Piper names, or to memorize hundreds of names, ideally you should do when you understand how and on what criteria is to identify a plant, in this case the genus Piper. Therefore sought to be exercised in a taxonomy with the scientific rigidity expected of a researcher, one that often does not exist in the way in which taxonomy is practiced current vascular plants.
LENGTH: 40 hours, 14 practices and 26 lectures.
PROGRAM:
1. Tree architectural models, an overview of concepts and terms (Reading). A look at the "problem" to describe the shape and the consequences thereof in cladistic analysis.
2. The family Piperaceae and their genealogical relationships.
3. Hypotheses about the genealogical relationships in the genus Piper.
4. Some Aspects of the Biogeography of Piper in the Neotropics.
5. The species of Piper in the Neotropics
Palotropicos
vs 6. Historical Associates Piper (Pheidole, Curculionidae, Chyroptera)
7. A quick visit to the major clades of Piper: Encke macrostachys, Ottoni, Carpunya, Peltobryon, Radula.

The leaf architecture manual is essential for the proper description of the different types of leaf venation and Piper used a two-hour workshop with leaves of a species of the genus (no matter what.) The remaining articles cover different aspects of architecture in vascular plants and as was the analysis of architectural units, not necessarily in Piper.
